Dice Games: Collecting the Different Types of Dice

Even people who are not big into playing the actual dice games can still enjoy collecting the different types of dice that are available. There are hundreds of different styles and options of dice in production that people can collect.

These dice range from the interesting polyhedral dice to dice formerly used by casinos, which are often required to have been marked through by the states in which the casinos were operating. For people who are interested in starting a collection of dice, there are a few different things that should be considered.

Questions to Consider

Dice are very popular to collect because of their wide array of shapes and sizes. Collecting dice does not have to be a strictly regulated hobby. Like any other hobby, people can collect any type and brand of dice they wish. However, people who are wishing to start a serious collection or to one day sell their collection for money need to ask themselves a few questions when they are considering whether to buy certain types of dice.

First of all, the collector should look at the different shapes and sizes of the available dice to decide which type he would like to collect. The most important step besides knowing which type of dice will be collected is determining the condition of the dice. Are the dice worn in any way? Are there any dents, nicks, or scratches in the dice that might detract from their value? Do the dice have any faded spots that may also change their value?

Dice Sets

If the collector is aiming for a set of dice, are all the pieces in the set present? Having a set that is missing certain pieces can certainly be a deterrent to people wishing to purchase the set. Of course, collectors need to ask themselves just how important the condition and age of the dice are to them. It is true that dice with markings – for example, former casino dice — are more collectible than those without markings. Also, dice made of another material besides plastic – like wood, bone, or metal — are rarer than the many plastic dice that are so common today.

Collectors should also consider the importance of the dice bag when keeping a collection or considering selling the set. Dice bags made of leather and suede may hold more value, but bags made of felt and other materials are also available.
