Dice Games: Rolling the Dice
Like shooting the dice, which often involves throwing the dice onto a backboard-type object so the dice bounce off and then change sides before coming to a stop, rolling the dice is supposed to ensure that the outcome of the two die will be completely random. Rolling the dice is a very important part of any dice game in which the outcome of the dice is to determine the game. Stopping Cheating When a player is rolling the dice, he still has the opportunity to try and cheat the hand. He may try to hold onto the dice and then roll them in such a manner that he can reasonably estimate what type of outcome he will get from that roll. While this can be more difficult to do in casinos, where surveillance is usually high tech and on target, it can be easier to accomplish in a private game in a home-type setting. While players may try many different ways to attempt to control the roll, there are a few methods game operators can try to avoid having this unpleasant outcome. The best way to keep players from attempting to control the dice they are rolling is to see that the dice are significantly rattled before the roll. This usually means the dice are placed in cups and then shaken upside down before the roll. Yet some players are not deterred by this method, so some games have developed other ways to try to stop cheating during the rolling process. Controlling the Rolling Some games like Chuck-A-Luck, a popular dice game, have specially designed cages or contraptions to control the dice that are being rolled. In Chuck-A-Luck, the dice are rolled in an hour-glass shaped wire cage that rotates. In Grand Hazard, another popular dice game, the dice are rolled through a hazard chute which is another way game operators can try to ensure randomness. It is not surprising that players might try to influence the game at its most pivotal point – the roll. Yet game operators are continually searching for methods to deter this type of playing, and most of the time, perfecting cheating methods during the rolling process takes too much time and effort for most people to accomplish. | ||||
